What is Fire Risk Assessment?

A Fire Risk Assessment is an examination of workplace activities and workplaces that could cause harm or injury. It should allow you to decide where enough precautions are already in place and where more can be introduced.

Why carry out a Fire Risk Assessment?
UK companies used to rely on a Fire Officer to endorse the adequacy of the fire safety on their premises with the award of a Fire Certificate. However, the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations demand the development of a safety culture that gives employers and employees greater responsibility for their own safety. Risk Assessment is now a legal obligation for all businesses in accordance with the regulations!

New legislation will come into effect next year and will affect all UK businesses. The new Reform of Fire Safety Legislation will consolidate existing legislation and provide a risk-based approach to fire safety.

The scope will be wide and will mean that one fire safety regime will apply to all workplaces and other non-domestic dwellings. Fire certification regimes will be replaced with a risk assessment approach.

This means that businesses will no longer be able to rely on a fire officer from the local brigade visiting their premises and checking that all relevant fire safety management procedures and measures are in place. The onus is now on the business owner.
