Health Technical Memorandum 65 (HTM 65 Part 2 - fire safety signs) specifies the range of escape route signs specifically for NHS Estates, which include the addition of a symbol depicting flames, which tests have show is more readily recognised as a fire safety message.

This requirement is in accordance with Health Technical Memorandum 86 for fire risk assessments in hospitals. HTM 86 states “It is not possible to accept or compensate for a lower standard”.
