The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 consolidates all existing legislation of fire certification and requires the completion of a formal fire risk assessment. This means that businesses will no longer be able to rely on the fire officer visiting their premises and checking all procedures are in place. The onus is now on the premises Responsible Person. This responsibility seems a daunting task, especially when one considers human safety and liability resulting from fire.

'The Responsible Person must make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to which relevant persons are exposed for the purpose of identifying the general fire precautions he needs to take to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed on him by or under the Order.' RRO
